Annual Change of Watch Dinner Meeting

We will hold our annual Change of Watch meeting at the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead, on Friday, April 21st, starting at 1800 (6 PM).

Dinner will be a buffet.

Our speaker, Bob Begin, will talk about the tragic lost of the USS Indianapolis.   She was a heavy cruiser.  President Roosevelt ,had a soft spot for her and used her for several voyages of state.  Launched in 1931 at a cost of about $11 million, she was 610' long, a beam of 66' and displaced 11,180 tons.  Her peacetime years were spent "showing the flag" in the Pacific and Atlantic. Once war broke out, she would spend all of 1942,43,44, and most of 45 In combat.  She was considered a "lucky" ship until March of 18 , when she was bombed by  Japanese plane and sent back to the yard for repairs. By mid July she was ready for assignment.  On July 16th he left San Francisco on a TOP SECRET mission that not even her Captain was aware of. The mission was to deliver the first atomic bomb to an island airbase for use against Japan. Having completed this mission Indianapolis was assigned to an invasion fleet in the Philippines.

Traveling alone, she was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on July 30. In 12 minutes, she sank, Over 900 men went into the water.  Incredibly, they would not be discovered missing for almost 5 nights and 4 days. During this time they were subjected to numerous dangers; dehydration, exhaustion, hypothermia, dementia, and a most primal enemy....sharks. Of the 900 men who went in the water, only 317 were rescued. This tragedy was the largest single loss of life on any ship in the US Navy during WWII.  And the irony is that the war would be over in two weeks.  This is a tale of courage, sacrifice, lost hope, and  losses tht wrenched America.  It is a riveting story that warrants telling.

Tri-District Conference (D12, D14, D19)

Greetings to District 12 members!

We have a very important Tri-District Conference (D12, D14, D19) coming in October. I am asking all of you, if at all possible, to please attend. Hosted by District 19 it will be held at the 5 star Samoset Resort in Rockport Maine on October 22 to 24. The business portion will be Saturday the 23rd. Flyer below.

1- We have a stellar agenda with terrific presentations, ABClub Chief Commander Mary Paige Abbott in attendance, and a fantastic keynote speaker. That alone justifies your presence! You will NOT be bored!

2- Your presence will demonstrate your support for ABClub and your desire to restart our activities.

3- The recent governing Board meeting approved our request to merge D12 and D14 to become a new District 34. You will have a chance to meet and mingle with our Cape and R.I. brethren.

4- On Saturday afternoon D12 and D14 members will have a joint meeting to vote on a slate of officers for our new district. We expect that both D12 and D14 will be well represented on the new bridge. I have agreed to be nominated as Commander of D34. When we complete voting we will become District 34!

By your attendance and your vote you will show your support for the D34 and the entire bridge.

5- And, of course, D19 members will be our hosts and are eager to make your acquaintance!

All hotel and conference registration is on the D12 site at http://www.usps.org/localusps/d12 .

You will save money if you register for the conference by Sep. 29! And rooms at this fabulous resort are only $139 if you reserve by Oct. 10. A flyer is attached.

The time is over to "think about it" . If this organization makes your boating life better, show your appreciation by registering for the conference now!

Thank you for getting this far.

Cheers,

Joe Kelliher, DCdr 12

Member Meeting

Secretary Jack Reed and Evelyn will share a presentation on their favorite boats:  TRAWLERS!! “We own a trawler we love, but have become addicted to reviewing trawlers on line, and based upon our research and our own cruising experience, we have come up with a list of attributes that we would like to see in a trawler.  And although it is virtually impossible to find a boat that has all of these attributes, we have come pretty close!  So come Thursday evening, October 14th, 1830, and see what we have come up with, and whether or not you agree with us!”

Dinner starts at 6:30pm. Presentation to follow.
